Kia ora everyone,
Earlier this month we wrote a recount about a time with family.  I am really really disappointed because  of my score at the level I am at  (the level I am at was 3A) I did very bad on this test and I knew if I tried I could probably reach 4A or 5B.  This was by far the worst piece of writing I have ever done this whole year and last whole year, but next year I will try my best to catch up.

Eating hearts and origins!!!

Last week, we had wonderful Terry, from life Ed.  We learnt about the body and the lungs, livers, the systems, the brain and more. Today, we did an acrostic poem about one of our recent experiments. Observing and dissecting lamb heart and kidneys! We touched, felt, smelt and tasted the heart and kidney.  Now, I would like to tell you about the experiment using the acrostic poem we just did 😊.  

Skittles

This week we did a Skittle experiment and that following day we had to write a recount. When I mean we did a experiment I mean we did a pattern experiment where we watched a satisfying movement as the Skittle colours swirled in the water. So hope you enjoy my recount.

The abandoned hospital - By Willow

I took one through the door and then immediately I had shivers down my spine.It looked like it could have been used in a horror movie scene and was so dusty and horrid it was a monstrosity. The air smelt rotten, stale, moldy and so repulsive that I could hardly breathe. As I approached the bed a strong smell of stinky socks filled my nose.  

I wandered further into the depths of the deep dark hospital I could swear I heard whispers flowing through the air and I suddenly had a strange feeling that someone or something was following me.

     

Science fair preparation

This term we have been focusing on our theme up up and away. This term we are also doing our science fair so most of our class has been trying to work on experiments that are based on, in the air or the sky. My group and I are doing an experiment called Lightning in a jar.  This experiment is caused by friction so, how it works is you put aluminium inside of a glass jar then you put a dryer sheet on top of the glass jar (PS: you have to use a dryer sheet you can not use a tissue instead, I tried it trust me I know) Then you put around about 10 thumbtacks in the dryer sheet, after that you put a strong metal lid on top of the glass jar, finally you rub a balloon (one of those stretchy animal balloons) on your head to create static electricity and place the balloon on top of the glass jar I believe your result would be be that the static electricity would caused friction to create the lightning in a jar.

We are learning how to match a thesis and and write scientific reports. We have been doing experiments and writing about them. This is a reading activity we did. We had to be able to match a wondering question with its thesis.

We are learning how to understand the structure and language of a report about a scientific experiment #3 Understanding that a hypothesis is a brainy prediction based on what you already know.

In this exercise you need to match a thesis with its hypothesis.  Use the ‘Fill tool’ to colour code the matching xsazideas.

I know that a puddle of water is a small amount of water lying (usually) on the ground. I know that water is a substance which is found on our planet and that it can exist as a solid (ice), liquid or a gas (water vapour). I know that the main reason water changes from one state to another on Earth is because of  temperature -heat or cold. On Earth a sunny day is when there are no clouds, the sky is blue and the temperature is usually warm or hot.	I predict that when I mix vinegar and baking soda together that a chemical reaction will occur and that I will be able to notice this. I might feel hotness or coldness, notice smoke or bubbles, smell something, hear some kind of noise or  find that the taste or texture of the foods has changed.
I know that heavy things usually sink and light things float. However, container ships are heavy but they still float so there must be more things that have an effect on floating than just weight. Blutack is a squishy material that is quite light. It usually comes as a wide, flat strip but you can shape it into a round ball, a sausage shape, an O shape etc or you could flatten it out into a thin, wide shape like a leaf or saucer. Leaves usually float and ships look a little like a leaf shape.	I predict that when I take an ice cube out of a freezer it will begin to change back into liquid water (this is called melting) because it will no longer be colder than 0 degrees centigrade.
I know that an ice cube is water which is frozen. I know that that liquid water freezes into ice when the temperature reaches 0 degrees centigrade. An ice cube will stay an ice cube as long as it stays in a freezer.	I predict that if I make a puddle of water somewhere on the playground on a hot, dry day that the puddle will dry up and disappear quite quickly.
I know that everything we eat is made up of different kinds of chemicals.Sometimes when you mix different chemicals together they react with each other in different ways and the substances will do things that they didn’t do before (chemical reaction) and become different to what they were like before (chemical change). You will be able to notice things happening by using your 5 senses to  listen, smell, feel, look at and sometimes taste what is going on. I know that vinegar and baking soda are both food substances and I learned that they are chemically different	I predict that if I take some ice cubes out of a freezer and wrap them in different materials, I will find that one material will keep the ice cube frozen for longer than the others. This material would then have proven itself to be the best insulator.
I know that liquid water changes into a solid (ice) when the temperature reaches 0 degrees centigrade. I know that a freezer will keep water solid because a freezer’s job is to keep food at a temperature just below 0 degrees centigrade.	We are going to use Bluetack as our material. We will use the same amount of Blutack to make three different shapes. One will be a straight, rectangular strip of Blutack, one will be a compact, round ball and the third will be a rounded  saucer shape like a boat. We predict that at least one of these will float.
I know that insulators are materials that can be used to protect yourself from too much heat or cold. When we put clothes on because we are cold, the clothes are insulators which help our bodies stay warm. If you put insulating material like Pink Batts in the ceiling of your house, in the winter the Batts help keep warm air inside the house. In the summer, The Pink Batts help stop hot air coming into the house so they help to keep us cool. Many  food containers like Thermos flasks and Chilly Bins are made out of insulating materials to keep food hot or cold.	I predict that when I put some liquid water into a freezer it will change from a liquid state into a solid state (ice) because the temperature in the freezer will be below 0 degrees centigrade.

Zoofari

This week, we went down to Auckland zoo for a Zoofari!!! ( YAY ).  Now, I'm sure many of you know what a Zoofari is but if you don't this is what it is and this is what we did. Well, a Zoofari is when a school is picked to stay the night at the zoo.  After we arrived and put away all our bags our class got put in groups with an adult to supervise us my group was Freedom , Me ,  Kayne ,  Mosese , Nero , Alexis ( the names in the blue are the boys and the names in the pink are the girls ).  After we got that all sorted we were free to adventure.  After we explored the zoo me and some other fellow students stayed the night at the old elephant house.   That night we went out side for a night Zoofari.  The night Zoofari was like the day Zoofari but 20 times better.

Here is my basic facts progress for this year. In Term 1 I was working on Stage 6 and I got a score of 47/60. In Term 2, my basic facts score for Stage 6 was 54/60 .

Fun Friday (Getting ready)

Today Team Moana (aka my class ) have been setting up the one and only FUN - FRIDAY 😄YAY!😄 What is Fun Friday? You may ask, well ...  ...  Fun Friday is a school event where our seniors ( year five and six) set up activites to fund raise for well,normally a school trip.  The group I'm in is called Minute to Win it. My group members are called Kate , Kyra , Lani , Taylor , Charlie , Lilly , Hollie , Waiorere and Jessica (so ten people in my group including me.)

Animal Onesie Day

- Guys today (Friday 2nd of June 2017) it is animal onsie day. What is that,you might ask? Well, this   animal onise day is a fundraiser activity for our little year one and two's zoo trip.  So I have a giraffe onsie therefor I'm a giraffe (in the giraffe group).  Giraffes are in the lama,deer,hippo,moose,sheep,camel,pig,antelope and buffalo family.  Giraffes are also mammals. 😃

A long day

It was dark, I was so cold but then I saw a beam of light getting brighter by the second. I reached towards it then suddenly I felt a little breeze come along tickling my cheek.  I walked on getting closer and closer to the strange bright light until I was really close.  I heard a little noise, it sounded like a piece of goo go splish splosh splish splosh. It went on and on repeatedly. Then a gush of water poured onto my face. I fell to the ground.  I looked back at the light that was beaming towards me. Then I took two big steps back I didn't think, I was out of control. I got ready to leap towards it until I heard a noise “Willow, wake up! Hurry hurry, we are going to be late.” It was my mum. “Willow,” she spoke in a low voice, I could feel her tugging on my arm, then it all came back to me it was just all a dream, but it was so realistic I thought in my head.  Like a robot I slowly lifted myself up and off of my bed.  “Oh no, its Saturday!” I don't know why I was so dramatic but I yelled like it was the end of the world. “Oh no, what do I do! Ok so I need to get ready for hockey and then I need to pack my bags to get ready to get to the Jacks’ house after hockey”.  

TWO HOURS LATER……

“There, all dressed and ready for hockey,” I spoke cheerfully but all Mum wanted to do was go.  Soon enough we arrived at hockey where I was put as a half with my friend Jessica Jack.  I was a little confused, I don't know why but every time the ball would swoop past me and I would run up to it I would always remember the time two of my friends ( Asha and Kate) raced out to the ball as I was right behind them, then suddenly BANG!!!!  The ball hit me right smack in the mouth.  

FORTY MINUTES LATER

“Oh finally” I said in relief, the hockey game was now over. ( YOUR TEAM WON!!!). Then it was off to the Jack’s (Kate Jack, Jessica Jack Kelly Jack, Alec Jack, Olivia Jack and Todd Jack) house. ( Ok let's not make the story too long, it is called a long day for a reason). Me and my friend Kate Jack rode our bikes down to their hay barn ( they live on a farm). When we arrived the first thing I could see was an old rope swing.  I stood high on the hay not knowing what I was  doing. Really one thing for sure I knew that my idea would not end well.  I stood on the highest haybale I could find and at the same time I was pulling the rope swing with me. For the second time this day I was being quite dramatic and said to myself;

“ R . I . P me, R . I .P”  I jumped onto the rope and screamed “AHHHHH”! my feet slipped off the rope. I was dangling off the rope going back and forwards, bashing into pieces of wood every time.  

LATER ON THAT DAY

Ok guys ok, as this story says LATER ON THAT DAY ….well yeah, I was pretty excited because Kate and I found out that we were going to the Weber Bros Circus😝 that night. (YAY)  Well, when it was time to go and we had already jumped in the car and buckled, our seat belts and took off. We were astronauts and the car was a speeding rocket.  It took a few minutes but soon enough we made it to the Kerikeri park where the circus was to take place..

I’m not going to tell you guys everything but I can tell you that getting inside took like two hours!.  FINALLY after a long long long long long time we could enter. Just so the story does not get too long I will tell you my top three favourite acts. So my third favorite was a duet where a girl and a boy used their body strength to lift themselves sidewards on a big, big pole and did some flips around it. Secondly, there was a hilarious clown who stuck himself into a giant whoopee cushion and bounced around in it. He was a crazy potato. Now for my favorite act of the night, the big ball of death! Ok, it is when four motorcycles were in this giant metal ball ( you could see them of course) rode around and did flips in it while a girl stood in the middle.  That day was pretty cool and it was quite a LONG DAY.

Personifcation

Kia ora this week we have been learning about personification. Personification is when your writing a descriptive sentence of what something would do with out using the word an or like.

• The Sneakers where so tired by along day of running in the school triathlon.
• The alarm clock yelled to the girl saying “GET UP IT'S SEVEN AM GET UP GET UP”….
• The Stop sign scolded the car for driving past a red light.
• The Eggs were sweating nervously when they saw the hot flames heating up the pan.
• The piano sang gracefully every time the girl tickled the keys.
• The moon howled in the night sky

My Argument on why we should be allowed to build huts.

Kia Ora everyone and today at school me and my friends have sadly had our hut destroyed by the care taker matua Ken (yes 👿) so a lot of us had been quite sad about that so we decided that we need to make a argument to MAKE HUTS GREAT AGAIN OK maybe i'm exaggerating a little but we needed to make a argument on why we should have huts enjoy.

                 Is it ok to build huts?

I believe we should be allowed to build huts. Firstly I think creating/building huts is awesome because you can use your imagination plus you also need to use teamwork to build huts  and it can make you and your friends even closer friends than before.  When you're building your hut you can pretend to be the greatest builder in man (or girl) kind (dun dun duuuun). Secondly when you're in one of these little groups of people that build huts then you have always got somewhere to go and play when you're bored and pretend that you're in a new survival dimension and a hut is a place that you can socialise with your friends. Finally huts  are a very good activity to do because it can get you ready for survival and if you're lost you can build a hut for shelter one day you could be the greatest survivor in New Zealand !!!   and just by building and having fun with huts as a kid. Conclusion: Looking at all three reasons I think building a hut is a great activity it is fun, helpful and it is cool to be creative.  So please Matua Please let us build huts again.
